Custom Handmade Furniture
Solid Cherry Desk
-
Cherry Flip Top Desk
Cherry is one of my favorite wood species to use for a build. The color and the grain are just beautiful.
-
Hand Tool Build
As a personal challenge, this desk was built entirely with hand tools - no electricity was used (except to power the radio).
-
Cherry Desk - frame
I started by building the sides and underlying structure.
-
Dovetails
In addition to dovetailing all of the drawers, the cubby structure is held together with this timeless joint.
-
"Half-Blind" Dovetails
Dovetails were created on the sides of the drawer fronts, the tails being hidden, or “blind”, from the front.
-
Edge Details
The flip top edge was decorated using moulding planes.
-
Ready for finish
Once the build was complete, all that was left was to apply a beautiful shellac finish.
-
Flip Top Desk Open
Ready to tie flies!
Custom Kitchen Island
-
Maple Kitchen Island
A custom sized island to add a little more work area and storage in a small kitchen.
-
Solid maple construction
Clean lines and sturdy joinery make up the structure of this build.
-
Build complete
Everything is done except for the finish.
-
Close up of the slat shelf
Solid maple slats are pinned in place to make up the two shelves.
-
Brass drawer pulls
The customer picked out these beautifully simple drawer pulls.
-
Drawer detail
Hand cut dovetail joinery on the drawers.
-
Kitchen island complete
This practical but stylish piece is the perfect custom addition to the kitchen.
Walnut Shelving Unit
-
Custom Walnut Shelving
Starkweather Tattoo Shop asked for a custom shelving unit/room divider to display items behind their counter.
-
Solid walnut
I sourced the lumber from The Wood Cycle, a partner business that mills lumber from local trees..
-
Complicated glue-up
They say you can never have enough clamps.
-
Build complete
The customer designed this asymmetric look, which I really enjoyed bringing to life.
White Oak and Steel Bookcase
-
Custom Bookcases
The customer wanted two matching bookcases that would fit on either side of a window.
-
Local White Oak
I again sourced the lumber from The Wood Cycle, a partner business that mills lumber from local trees.
-
Shelves Milled
I milled all of the lumber to rough size…
-
Welding the uprights
…then the metal work began.
-
Build complete
Once everything was built, all that was left was a natural finish.
-
Bookshelves in place
The bookshelves look great surrounding the window of the customer’s home office.
